The US Embassy in Ankara confirmed Dec. 18 that a “member of the US diplomatic mission community” was involved in a car crash last week while reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol, but denied earlier reports that the individual in question was the husband of the US consul general to Istanbul.
Local media had reported last week that Mounir Elkhamri was involved in a car accident, injuring one person while reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol. The reports identified him as "the spouse of US Consul General in Istanbul Julie Eadeh."
“A member of the US Diplomatic Mission community was involved in the accident. However, the individual involved, Mounir Elkhamri, is not the husband of the US Consul General in Istanbul Julie Eadeh,” the embassy said in a statement released on Twitter. “Consul General Eadeh is married to another diplomat working at the US Embassy in Ankara.”
Turkey’s private Demiroren news agency (DHA) reported last week that another driver was being treated at an Istanbul hospital after the crash on Dec. 15. The image released by the DHA showed the car’s rear partly smashed by the crash.
