Who is Carlos Queiroz, the man who could be Iran’s coach at the World Cup in Doha?

The Iranian men’s national soccer team may bring back coach Carlos Queiroz to lead the team at the World Cup in Doha later this year.
Who is Carlos Queiroz? Queiroz was born in Mozambique to Portuguese parents when the southern African country was a Portuguese colony. He had an “unremarkable” professional playing career before becoming a coach in the 1990s. He rose through the Portuguese national ranks and coached the men’s team from 1991 to 1993, according to the BBC.
Queiroz has coached numerous teams since then, including the New York Metro Stars (now known as the Red Bulls), Real Madrid, as well as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia men’s national sides.
In Iran, Queiroz coached the national team from 2011 to 2019, according to the German soccer website Transfermarkt. Iran qualified for both 2014 and 2018 under his leadership, but lost in the first round of each.
