Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur falls short in Wimbledon final

Jabeur was the first African woman to reach a grand slam tennis final and has inspired young Tunisians to pick up a racket.

Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur lost the women's tennis Wimbledon final on July 9.

Jabeur was defeated by Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina in three sets. The number three-ranked Tunisian won the first set, before losing the next two.

Jabeur was the first woman from the African continent to reach a grand slam tennis final, and her second-place finish at this year's Wimbledon is a career best for her.

“I’m a proud Tunisian woman standing here today,” Jabeur said following her victory in the semifinals. "I want to see more not just Tunisian, but African, Arab players on tour.”
