Iran navy expanding its presence in Red Sea, Israel says
Israel's defense chief said Iran's navy is "methodically basing itself in the Red Sea," posing risks to international shipping.
Iran’s navy has recently increased its presence in the Red Sea, posing a threat to international shipping and regional stability, Israel’s defense chief Benny Gantz claimed on Tuesday.
“Today we can confirm that Iran is methodically basing itself in the Red Sea, with its ships patrolling the southern region,” Gantz said during a forum hosted by the Economist magazine in Greece today.
“In the last month, we’ve identified the most significant Iranian military presence in the area in the past decade. It is a direct threat to international trade, energy supply, and global economy,” the Israeli defense chief said.
Gantz, who addressed the Economist’s annual government roundtable event, displayed aerial images of four Iranian Navy vessels: a Hengam-class landing ship, a Mowj-class frigate and two Bandar Abbas-class support vessels.
