Egypt and Kuwait agreed Friday to work together on a potential railroad linking Egypt to Sudan.

Egypt’s Ministry of International Cooperation signed the $2.5 million deal with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Kuwait’s official aid agency. The two entities will conduct feasibility studies regarding a potential 570-kilometer (354-mile) railway system connecting Egypt to its southern neighbor Sudan, the ministry said in a statement.

The agreement was signed at a meeting of financial institutions in the Arab world happening now in Saudi Arabia.

The railway between Egypt and Sudan was first proposed in 2010, but received renewed attention in 2018, according to the Egyptian state-owned news outlet Al-Ahram.
