A rocket was fired from Gaza into Israel on Tuesday as Israelis voted in their national election.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Tuesday night that a rocket had been fired from the Palestinian territory and had hit an empty field near the southern city of Beersheba. The IDF did not immediately provide further details, only adding that the affected areas were placed on “alert.”

The attack may have targeted today's voting for Israel’s national election. Israeli media outlets reported that the rocket hit while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was campaigning in Beersheba.

This is the first time Palestinian groups have fired a rocket on an Israeli election day, according to Yedioth Ahronoth.
