1. Israel: Jordanian king takes up the fight against Israel’s annexation bid
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “confident” that US President Donald Trump will back Israel’s plan to annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Bibi also probably has majority support in the Israeli parliament, or Knesset, on his side. Perhaps that’s all that matters, and annexation is a done deal. Or maybe not — don’t count out Jordan’s King Abdullah.
The deal: Blue and White Party leader and Knesset (parliament) Speaker Benny Gantz agreed to a Knesset vote on annexationas soon as July 1 as part of the deal to form an emergency government (still to be formed) with Netanyahu. Gantz, who may be having second thoughts on annexation, can’t even veto the bill when it comes up.
Do Israelis really want annexation? Yes, writes Efraim Inbar, who argues that establishing sovereignty over the Jordan Valley is no far-right fantasy that Bibi coerced from Gantz, but rather a long-standing Israeli security objective going back to the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who also made peace with both Jordan and the Palestinians. Annexation, according to Inbar, has widespread support among Israelis.
Second thoughts: Despite his deal with Bibi, Gantz is working the back channels to hold off on West Bank annexation, writes Ben Caspit, on national security grounds, citing the risk of undoing the Israel-Jordan peace treaty. Nonetheless, a Knesset majority probably matters more than the reasoned arguments of Gantz and the hundreds of former Israeli national security officials who have gone public with their opposition. | | | |
