The Arab League will gather for an emergency virtual meeting this week to discuss Israeli plans to annex parts of the West Bank, the organization said Monday.

The Palestinian Authority is covening the pan-Arab group Thursday to “discuss ways of providing political, legal and financial support for the Palestinian leadership so that it can confront the Israeli plan," according to Hossam Zaki, Arab League deputy secretary-general.

Under an emergency unity deal reached by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Benny Gantz, the Israeli Parliament known as the Knesset will vote as soon as July 1 on annexing large portions of the West Bank.

In a message to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres last week, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the annexation plans risked “igniting tension in the region.”
