An appeal to Lakhdar Brahimi

A cease-fire and the immediate holding of Geneva II must be at the top of Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi and the UN's agenda.

Dear Ambassador Lakhdar Brahimi,

I appreciate your contribution in the last two years to bring about the end of the Syrian conflict, which has claimed so many lives. It is urgent, however, that you move forward with the timetable for the Geneva II conference.

It is beyond comprehension that the Geneva II conference should be held one month from today (Dec. 23, 2013), given the continued escalating violence and the increased population displacement and number of dead and wounded.

It is imperative that an enforceable cease-fire take place either through the UN Security Council or through the powers involved in Geneva II. The date has to be brought forward to the earliest possible date. One month of continued violent fighting is too much of a burden on the Arab — and possibly the world’s — conscience.
