Massie renews Hegseth impeachment push as GOP blames Iran war for midterm losses

Most Democrats and at least a few Republicans are said to support impeaching Hegseth, but President Donald Trump still publicly backs the beleaguered Pentagon chief, and House leadership can still try to prevent a vote on Rep. Massie's measure.

WASHINGTON — Outgoing Congressman Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said he plans to bring articles of impeachment against US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in the coming weeks in response to what he calls the Trump administration’s illegal prosecution of war against Iran.

“There is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns,” Massie posted on X late Wednesday, after confirming his plan in comments to CNN.

The announcement came after Democrats swept control of the House and Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, delivering a stunning rebuke to the Trump administration’s second-term foreign and domestic policies.

Massie’s effort is likely to have support from several sitting Democrats and at least some Republicans in the House who have lost faith in Hegseth over his handling of the US war in Iran, two congressional sources told Al-Monitor earlier this week. “He has the votes,” another well-placed source said.
