A vocally anti-Israel candidate won a key primary election in the US state of Colorado on Tuesday night, adding to a string of recent victories by progressive candidates who have made the Palestinian cause a major part of their campaigns.
Melat Kiros defeated incumbent Diana DeGette and fellow challenger Wanda James in the three-way race in the state’s 1st Congressional district, receiving 51.3% of the vote, according to The Associated Press. DeGette, who won 41.7% of the vote, had served in Congress since 1997.
The district includes much of the state capital, Denver, and surrounding areas. Kiros is expected to win the general election in the heavily Democratic district on Nov. 3.
