Syria announces direct flights to Amsterdam as Europe links expand
The head of Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport announced that after years of suspension, Syrian Airlines would restart direct services between Damascus and Amsterdam.
Syria's efforts to reconnect with Europe are gathering pace as the country's new government seeks to restore international air links after more than a decade of war and isolation.
What happened: The head of Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, Omar Hosari, announced on Sunday that the Syrian government and Dutch authorities were finalizing the launch of direct flights between Damascus and Amsterdam. In a post on X, he said Syrian Airlines would resume direct services between the two cities after years of suspension.
The announcement marks the third European destination to be opened or announced since Syria's new government came to power in January 2025.
On Thursday, Hosari said discussions with German authorities on lifting a ban on flights between Syria and Germany had made positive progress and that a final decision was expected in the first half of July, according to state-owned news agency SANA.
