Hezbollah calls on Lebanon to 'correct' relations with Iran
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun recently told Iran to stay out of the country’s affairs, drawing a rebuke from Tehran.
Hezbollah called on the Lebanese government on Tuesday to mend ties with Iran as tensions between the two countries soar over the regional war.
What happened: In a statement addressing relations with Iran and the recent Iranian strikes on Israel, the group said that the Iranian missile attack was in “defense” of the Lebanese people and that the Islamic Republic deserves “gratitude” rather than “denial and deliberate insults in response to external dictates.”
Hezbollah went on to explicitly call for Lebanon to “correct” its relations with Iran, saying, “We call on the Lebanese authorities to seize the opportunity available and correct their official relationship with the Islamic Republic in a way that serves the interest of both states."
Iran fired ballistic missiles at Israel on Sunday after an Israeli strike targeting Hezbollah in Beirut. Israel responded with strikes on Iran before the two sides announced a halt in the fighting on Monday. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen carried out strikes of their own on Israel during the hostilities.
