BEIRUT — As a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel entered into force at midnight on Friday, attention has now shifted to whether the next stage will bring a permanent end to hostilities and a broader peace.
The 10-day ceasefire, which ended nearly two months of fighting between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, was announced Thursday by US President Donald Trump following a call with his Lebanese counterpart, Joseph Aoun.
Earlier this week, Lebanese Ambassador to the US Nada Hamadeh and her Israeli counterpart, Yechiel Leiter, met for talks at the State Department in Washington to lay the groundwork for direct negotiations. It was the first direct exchange between the two sides in decades.
However, the post-war situation hinges on Lebanon’s fragmented decision-making landscape, where numerous political and armed actors are pushing their own agendas.
