Trump warns Iran over Hormuz mines as senator cautions US may be nearing ground war
Iran has begun placing mines in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a recent report, after the American president threatened to strike Iran harder if oil shipments are interfered with.
US President Donald Trump warned Iran on Tuesday against placing mines in the strategic Strait of Hormuz following a report that Iranian forces had begun to do so. Tensions over the critical waterway are reaching a boiling point, and a prominent senator cautioned that the United States may be moving toward the deployment of American ground troops.
What happened: Trump said in a post on Truth Social that any mines should be removed “immediately” and threatened further military action if they are not, though he said there is no confirmation that Iran has placed the explosives in the strait.
“If Iran has put out any mines in the Hormuz Strait, and we have no reports of them doing so, we want them removed, IMMEDIATELY! If for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the Military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before,” said Trump, adding that removing any mines that may have been placed there would be a “giant step in the right direction!”
Trump vowed to "permanently eliminate” any vessel placing mines in the area.
