Iran detains over 500 accused of spying for Israel, US: What to know
Iranian authorities have arrested more than 500 people accused of helping facilitate strikes against Iran by sharing information with foreign intelligence agencies and media outlets.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Monday that five people were arrested for alleged links to Israel’s Mossad spy agency as Iranian authorities continue to round up people on suspicion of spying since the start of the US-Israeli war 17 days ago.
What happened: In a statement on Monday, the IRGC said its forces detained the five suspects in the northwestern province of West Azerbaijan following intelligence operations.
The statement alleged that the suspects took photographs and shared information about the movements of security and military forces to the London-based news outlet Iran International, which it accuses of being linked to Israel and hostile to the Islamic Republic. The statement further read that the information was destined for the Mossad via the news outlet.
Earlier on Sunday, another 18 people were detained, accused of sending photos of the locations of emergency aid workers and rescue teams at sites recently hit by US-Israeli strikes to Iran International, according to Iran’s Intelligence Ministry.
