Witkoff lays out conditions for deal with Iran, warns alternative 'bad one'
The US Middle East envoy has said he favors a diplomatic resolution of tensions with Iran rather than military action, in line with the president's recent remarks, but the threat of military escalation remains.
US envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff said Thursday that Washington prefers a diplomatic solution with Iran over military action, as the Trump administration showed signs of backing down on attacking the country over the violent crackdown unleashed against nationwide anti-regime protests.
At the Israeli-American Council conference in Miami on Thursday evening, Witkoff was asked if he thinks a US military strike on Iran was still on the table.
“I hope there’s a diplomatic resolution. I really do,” he said, warning that an alternative would be a “bad one.”
Witkoff named four issues that would need to be addressed in a diplomatic agreement with Iran: “nuclear enrichment; missiles — they have to cut back on their inventory — the actual [nuclear] material that they have, which is roughly 2,000 kilograms which is enriched anywhere between 3.67% and 60%; and the proxies, of course.”
