BEIRUT — At least two people were killed in a series of Israeli airstrikes in the Bekaa region in eastern Lebanon Thursday, as Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged the US-led committee tasked with monitoring the ceasefire that ended last year’s war with Israel to pressure the latter to stop its daily attacks on Lebanon.

Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes in the eastern and western mountain ranges surrounding the towns of Hermel and Shmustar, leaving two people dead, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Some of the strikes hit near schools in the area, shattering windows and injuring several children.

The Lebanese Ministry of Education condemned in a statement the “barbaric aggression against educational institutions,” calling on major countries to pressure Israel to halt attacks on schools and civilians.

The Israeli military said it struck a Hezbollah training camp and a site the Iran-backed group used to manufacture precision missiles.
