Iran publicly praises Gaza ceasefire but frets over its isolation and Israel’s gains
Iran has officially welcomed the Gaza ceasefire and has called for accountability over Israeli "genocide." Yet, sidelined from the US-Arab diplomacy, Tehran risks exposing its diminishing regional clout as it weighs the strategic costs of the conflict.
TEHRAN — As the US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took hold, Iran welcomed an end to what it has repeatedly called the "genocidal war" in Gaza. Tehran's response, however, reflects a complex calculus: While publicly endorsing measures that halt the bloodshed in the Palestinian enclave, the Islamic Republic remains deeply concerned about its marginalization in regional diplomacy and the broader implications for its strategic influence across the Middle East.
On Thursday, Iran's Foreign Ministry posted a statement on its Telegram channel urging the international community to hold accountable those responsible for "war crimes" and the "genocide" of Palestinians. It noted that an end to the war does not relieve governments and international bodies of their legal and moral responsibility to seek justice.
Iran had earlier expressed support for any measure that would ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the delivery of humanitarian aid and the advancement of Palestinian rights.
Yet beneath the official language lies Tehran's unease with its role, or lack thereof, in brokering the agreement and with the Trump administration's role in changing the Middle East.
