A bus attack in southern Syria's Suwayda province on Tuesday killed two people as a surge of violence across the region has pushed a prominent Druze leader to call for independence.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a bus on the highway between Damascus and Suwayda city, killing two people and wounding 13 others. The attack occurred near the Marjana gas station, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Suwayda, as the bus was en route from Damascus, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The local news outlet Suwayda 24 reported that government forces set up checkpoints in the area following the attack.

The Syrian government did not immediately comment on the incident and no group has claimed responsibility.
