Syria exports first oil in 14 years after sanctions lifted: What to know
The shipment marks a major step forward for Syria, which has been embroiled in a civil war for 14 years and under Western sanctions for more than four decades.
The state-owned Syrian Oil Company announced late Monday that it had exported 600,000 barrels of crude from the Tartous oil terminal on Syria's western Mediterranean coast, the country's first oil shipment in 14 years.
The crude was transferred aboard the Nissos Christiana tanker, which is sailing under the Greek flag, for the international company Bserv Energy, Syria’s state-run news agency SANA reported on Monday evening.
More oil exports will follow “in the coming period,” the statement read, adding that the government wants to revitalize Syria’s oil sector and expand cooperation with international companies.
The move was in line with the government's objective of boosting Syria’s presence in foreign oil markets, according to SANA.
