Lebanese government holds talks with Hamas as group balks at disarmament plan
Hamas has not agreed to give up its weapons in Lebanon, though the military has received a number of weapons from other Palestinian factions in recent weeks.
A Lebanese official said on Friday that Hamas has still not agreed to give up its weapons ahead of an operation to disarm Palestinian groups in the country.
Ramez Dimashkieh, chair of the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee, told Al-Hadath that the process of disarming factions in the Beddawi and Ain al-Hilweh camps will begin on Saturday and last three days.
Dimashkieh, a former Lebanese diplomat, was appointed by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to head the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee in March. The body serves as a task force to address issues regarding Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
“We are still talking with them about … the submission,” he told the outlet, referencing Hamas as well as independent factions and groups affiliated with the Palestine Liberation Organization.
