Iran, IAEA officials meet in Vienna as UN sanctions clock ticks
European powers have triggered the JCPOA’s snapback mechanism, setting a 30-day clock for the return of UN sanctions on Iran.
Iran and the UN's nuclear watchdog are back at the negotiating table in Vienna on Friday as Tehran faces mounting pressure from Europe over looming snapback sanctions.
What happened: Reza Najafi, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, told Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB that Iranian officials are holding another round of talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency on Friday in Vienna.
Najafi said the discussions are set to cover how Iran and the IAEA will cooperate under new conditions set by Iran’s parliament, adding that the talks aim to establish a “new framework of cooperation between Iran and the IAEA."
Tensions between the IAEA and Iran escalated following the war between Israel and Iran in June, which saw the US bomb Iran's Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan nuclear facilities. In the aftermath of the war, in early July, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed legislation suspending cooperation with the watchdog.
