TEHRAN — At least three political prisoners were executed in Iran over the weekend, the latest in what rights groups warn is a mounting wave of state killings as the country continues to reel from its recent war with Israel.
Mizan News Agency, which is affiliated with the judiciary, reported Saturday that Mehran Bahramian, a protester arrested in connection with the 2022 nationwide unrest, was executed in the central city of Semirom.
The unrest — also known as the Women, Life, Freedom movement — was crushed in a bloody crackdown that left more than 550 demonstrators dead.
Prosecutors convicted Bahramian of "enmity against God" over the killing of a Basij paramilitary officer. Human rights organizations argue that the verdict was issued based on confessions obtained under torture.
