Iran’s president has appointed Ali Larijani to lead Iran’s highest security body, reinstating the former nuclear negotiator to one of the country’s most influential security positions at a time of growing uncertainty for Iran.
What happened: Iranian state media on Tuesday reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a presidential decree appointing Larijani as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council; he had previously served in the position from 2005 to 2007.
The appointment comes as Iran undertakes a broader reorganization of its security architecture following the June war with Israel.
The SNSC is Iran’s top decision-making body on defense and foreign policy. Chaired by the president and subject to oversight by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the council coordinates military, intelligence and diplomatic strategies.
