Turkey’s pro-Kurdish DEM slams Fidan’s threats against Syria's SDF
As Ankara increasingly threatens the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, the opposition People's Equality and Democracy Party warns that a potential Turkish military operation against the Kurdish-led group could disrupt the peace process at home.
ANKARA — Turkey’s pro-Kurdish People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) spoke out Friday on Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s threats against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, saying his rhetoric is inconsistent with ongoing peace talks with Kurdish militants.
Ankara has been in talks with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has been fighting for Kurdish self-rule in Turkey since 1984, aiming to ensure the full disbandment of the PKK as well as its Syrian offshoot.
What happened: DEM spokesperson Aysegul Dogan said Fidan’s warnings against the Kurdish-led group were “unacceptable.”
“The foreign minister is not using language suitable to the [peace] process,” Dogan said in a press conference, calling on Fidan to abandon his “constant threatening language.”
