Turkey launches military training for Syria’s new army: What to know
Ankara has launched training, consultancy and technical assistance support to Syrian troops, according to the Turkish Defense Ministry.
ANKARA — Turkey has formally launched training, advisory support and technical assistance for Syria under a military cooperation deal Ankara and Damascus signed last week, a senior defense official said Thursday.
Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler and his Syrian counterpart, Murhaf Abu Qasra, inked a memorandum of understanding on Aug. 13.
A swift start: “Under the deal, the restructuring of Syria’s armed forces has gained momentum,” a high-level Defense Ministry source told reporters in Ankara on Thursday. “Training, consultancy, technical assistance and reciprocal visits were launched.”
A delegation from the Syrian Defense Ministry held talks with Turkey’s National Defense University earlier this week as part of efforts to coordinate the implementation of the deal, according to the source.
