Syria says six soldiers killed in Israeli drone strike as US pushes for security deal
There have been signs of progress in Israel-Syria talks, though tensions are flaring in the south and Syria has condemned a number of Israeli actions.
The Syrian government accused Israel on Wednesday of killing six of its soldiers in another sign of confrontations between the two neighbors as the United States pushes for a security deal.
What happened: Syria’s official news outlet SANA reported on Wednesday that an Israeli drone targeted a Syrian army unit in al-Kiswah, located 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of Damascus, killing six Syrian soldiers on Tuesday.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to Al-Monitor’s request for comment.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the soldiers were part of Syria's Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Brigade and that the Israeli strike targeted a military site. The war monitor described the area as a “strategic location,” citing the presence of military sites that were used by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and its importance as a corridor linking Damascus to the south.
