Lebanon's army receives 8 truckloads of weapons from Palestinian camps
The army received weapons from several Palestinian refugee camps in the south, following a similar handover last week from a camp in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
BEIRUT — Palestinian factions in Lebanon handed over eight truckloads of weapons to the Lebanese army on Thursday, marking the second phase of a nationwide disarmament of refugee camps.
What happened: The handover, completed from camps south of the Litani River, was coordinated by the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee, a government body that manages communication between Palestinian refugees and Lebanese state institutions.
According to the committee’s statement on Facebook, six trucks came from Rashidieh, one from al-Buss, and one from Burj al-Shemali, all in the southern city of Tyre. The weapons belonged to factions of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
“This process reflects a firm commitment to the Lebanese state's sovereignty and the extension of its full authority over all its territories, and to the exclusive possession of weapons by its legitimate institutions alone,” the committee added in its statement.
