Iran’s president to visit Armenia, China: What to know
Tehran is looking to strengthen ties with regional and Asian powers as Western sanctions continue to squeeze its economy.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is preparing to travel to Armenia and China in the coming weeks, two key stops in Tehran’s outreach to Eastern allies as it looks to ease the economic and diplomatic pressure from the West.
“Pezeshkian is scheduled to travel to Armenia in two weeks,” Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as confirming on Thursday.
The Iranian leader is then expected to head to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit scheduled for Aug. 31-Sept. 1 in the Chinese city of Tianjin.
