Iranian forces have prioritized targeting Jaish al-Adl and other groups in the southeast, and are seeking cooperation with Pakistan on the issue.
Iranian forces clashed with militants in the restive Sistan-Baluchistan province on Sunday, the latest flare-up in the country’s southeast.
Police said their forces were patrolling in Saravan County, on the border with Pakistan, when they came under fire from armed militants. The police killed three assailants and one member of the police force was killed, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
The pro-government Tehran Times said the attackers were “believed to be affiliated with Jaish al-Adl,” a Sunni jihadist group seeking independence for Baluchi areas of Iran and Pakistan. But the Baluchi media outlet Haalvsh reported that the group denied involvement, a claim Al-Monitor could not immediately verify.
The official Islamic Republic News Agency said Saturday that Iranian forces have seized more than 1,000 military-grade weapons in the province since March, including over 210 in August.
