Germany to halt Israel military exports that can be used in Gaza: What to know
Germany, traditionally one of Israel’s strongest allies in Europe, has been under pressure to toughen its stance toward the war in Gaza as the humanitarian crisis deepens.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Friday that Berlin will halt military exports to Israel, a move with potential ramifications for both Israeli defense imports overall and bilateral relations between the countries.
Merz said in a statement that Germany will not send any weapons to Israel that might be used in Gaza, citing the Israeli decision early Friday morning to occupy Gaza City, where close to 1 million Palestinians reside.
“Under these circumstances, the German Government will, until further notice, authorize no military equipment exports that can be used in the Gaza Strip,” said Merz.
Merz said that Israel has a right to defend itself against “Hamas terror” and work to free hostages in the enclave, but said he is “profoundly concerned” about the plight of civilians in the territory.
