Canada: Montreal port tied to Hezbollah car trade, presence in Americas
The Canadian government said Hezbollah and Hamas, as well as Sikh nationalist groups, are receiving financial support originating from Canada.
Ottawa alleged in a new report that Hezbollah is using at least one Canadian port as a hub through which to transfer luxury cars, in the latest sign of the group's active presence in North America.
The Canadian Finance Department released its 2025 assessment of money laundering and terrorist financing risks last Friday. In the report, the department said that several groups designated as terrorists under Canadian law have received financial support originating from Canada. The report specifically named Hezbollah, Hamas and the Khalistani groups Babbar Khalsa International and the International Sikh Youth Federation, both of which advocate for an independent Sikh homeland in India.
The report cited US officials who said Hezbollah buys used cars and then ships them to other countries for resale as part of its global efforts to generate revenue. The group sends the vehicles to the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Angola, Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Tanzania, Kenya and Yemen, and the proceeds are then sent to Lebanon via couriers, according to the report.
Canada named the Port of Montreal as a location where Hezbollah ships vehicles.
