US envoy warns Lebanon 'will be left behind' without action on Hezbollah
US envoy Tom Barrack’s visit to Beirut comes as Israel continues to launch near daily attacks at Lebanon despite a ceasefire that ended the 13-month conflict with Hezbollah late last year.
BEIRUT — US envoy Tom Barrack returned to Beirut on Monday, his second visit in less than a month as Washington presses the Lebanese authorities on a road map for the disarmament of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
Barrack held meetings with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
“What the government gave us was something spectacular, I am unbelievably satisfied with the response,” Barrack told reporters following his meeting with President Joseph Aoun.
On June 19, Barrack presented Lebanese officials with a 15-point political and security road map to extend the Lebanese state’s control over weapons and disarm Hezbollah.
