Israel announces capture of 'Iranian cell' in Syria: What to know
The operation comes amid potential progress in Israel-Syria normalization talks.
The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that it had apprehended members of an Iranian-affiliated group in southern Syria, while a war monitor said three Palestinians were arrested.
What happened: Israeli forces said they captured several members of a “terrorist cell operated by Iran” during a nighttime operation in Al-Basali in southern Syria. Israel gathered intelligence on the group via interrogations in recent weeks and weapons including firearms and grenades were found in the area, the military said in a statement.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Wednesday that three “citizens of Palestinian origin” were arrested by Israeli forces in the area. There were no clashes during their detention, according to the war monitor.
The observatory added that Israeli forces had arrested a relative of the three detainees two months ago.
