US envoy Barrack in Israel after cross-border shelling with Syria: What to know
US envoy for Syria Tom Barrack met Wednesday with Israeli officials in an effort to de-escalate ongoing tensions with Syria and Turkey.
Tom Barrack, the Trump administration’s special envoy for Syria and US ambassador to Turkey, arrived in Israel on Wednesday to meet with senior Israeli officials and discuss the political situation in Syria and ongoing tensions between Israel and Turkey.
Israel’s public broadcaster Kan reported that Barrack visited the Israel-annexed Golan Heights, together with Defense Minister Israel Katz, Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi.
The Defense Ministry confirmed to Al-Monitor that Barrack met with Katz and visited the "northern command," though it did not specify exactly where they visited.
Barrack’s visit comes just hours after Israel struck southern Syria, following the alleged firing of two rockets from Syrian territory toward the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights. The rockets landed in open areas.
