Turkey ramps up Iran border security as Ankara, UNHCR monitor refugee risks
UNHCR stands ready to support Turkey, though no major refugee movement has been observed along the Iranian border, the international body’s Turkey spokesperson told Al-Monitor.
ANKARA — Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler said Wednesday that Turkey has increased security along its southern borders amid the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, as Ankara and the UN refugee agency keep a close watch for any potential refugee fallout.
“Due to the recent developments in our neighbor Iran, security measures along our borders have also been increased,” Guler said.
The remarks came as he and the Turkish army’s top brass paid a visit to Turkey’s southern province of Van along the Iranian border.
“Along our borders, eight border brigades, six border regiments and approximately 60,000 personnel are on duty,” Guler added.
