Trump says US to meet Iran 'next week' amid strike damage doubts
The US president also doubled down on his claim that the US attack on Iran destroyed the country's nuclear program.
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said the United States and Iran will meet for a new round of negotiations next week but questioned whether a nuclear agreement is needed after US strikes “obliterated” the program.
“If we got a document, wouldn't be bad,” Trump said during a press conference at the NATO summit in The Hague, Netherlands. “We’re going to talk with them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement, I don’t know.”
The US and Iran held five rounds of direct and indirect talks aimed at reaching an agreement over Iran’s nuclear program in return for sanctions relief. Before Israel's June 13 attack derailed a planned sixth round of talks, negotiators were trying to bridge the gap between Washington's demand of zero uranium enrichment and Tehran's refusal to abandon its enrichment program.
Tehran has not confirmed next week’s meeting and Iran's mission to New York did not immediately return a request for comment.
