Israel shells southern Syria, says Sharaa ‘directly responsible’ for threats
Regional players have been mediating talks between Israel and Syria in an effort to reduce tensions amid Israeli strikes on the country.
Israel shelled southern Syria on Tuesday evening after reporting shells were fired from the country, marking the latest in a series of hostilities involving the two countries despite ongoing negotiations aimed at de-escalation.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Israel holds Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa “directly responsible for every threat and fire toward the State of Israel,” adding that “the full response will come soon.”
What happened: The Israeli military said that just before 10:00 p.m. local time (3:00 p.m. ET) two shells were fired from Syria toward Israeli territory. The shells landed in open areas in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights and triggered air sirens, according to the military.
Syria’s official news outlet, SANA, reported at around 10:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. ET) that Israeli artillery shelled unspecified targets west of Daraa, a southern Syrian city close to the Jordanian border.
