Israel expands Iran strikes, hits Fordow nuclear site, Evin prison: What to know
Israel said Monday it targeted the entrance of Evin Prison in Tehran, where many opponents of the Iranian government are held.
The Israeli air force began a series of strikes on Monday morning targeting military and nuclear sites in Tehran, according to Israel's Defense Ministry.
What happened: A statement issued by the ministry said that the military is “currently striking with unprecedented force regime targets and governmental repression bodies in the heart of Tehran." The statement added that Iran will be "severely punished" for every missile fired at Israel and that strikes will continue "with full intensity".
According to the Defense Ministry, Israel is attacking military command centers of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including the Basij headquarters in the north of Tehran and other governmental targets.
One of the strikes also hit the entrance of Evin Prison, where many opponents of the Iranian government are reportedly being held. It is currently unclear whether any prisoners were injured in the attack.
