Iran’s FM vows 'noninterference' in Lebanon during Beirut visit: What to know
The Iranian visit to Lebanon comes as talks of disarming the Iran-backed Hezbollah group is gaining momentum.
BEIRUT — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Beirut on Tuesday for an official visit amid growing pressure on Lebanese authorities to disarm the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group.
What happened: Araghchi met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the presidential palace in Beirut along with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji.
According to a statement from the Lebanese presidency, during the meeting Aoun reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Iran. He stressed the importance of dialogue, both domestically and among states, as the means to resolve disputes without resorting to violence.
Aoun also discussed the efforts to rebuild infrastructure destroyed during the recent 13-month Israel-Hezbollah war, calling the reconstruction process a top national priority. He said the Lebanese government’s rebuilding efforts are underway in cooperation with friendly countries. Araghchi said Iran is willing to take part in Lebanon's reconstruction if Beirut wants that.
