Egypt launches 5G network as North Africa's digital push accelerates
North African states are moving to introduce high-speed internet and data-intensive applications to business and government sectors in the face of increasing demand.
Egypt has joined the regional 5G race, with providers, including Orange Egypt and Vodafone Egypt, officially launching high-speed networks this week, as North African states push to upgrade digital infrastructure and compete in the tech-driven global economy.
What happened: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inaugurated Egypt's 5G network at an event held near the Pyramids, in Giza. Among those in attendance, according to the Egyptian Gazette, were Communications and Information Technology Minister Amr Talaat, along with some of his predecessors, and Giza Governor Adel El-Naggar as well as other officials. Among others at the event were a smattering of service provider executives, including from e& Egypt, Orange Egypt, Telecom Egypt and Vodafone Egypt.
Addressing guests, Madbouly hailed the 5G rollout as a milestone in Egypt’s digital transformation and technological empowerment.
Orange Egypt and Vodafone Egypt had launched 5G technology on the Egyptian market earlier on Wednesday.
