Crypto looted, TV hijacked: Iran grapples with wave of cyberstrikes
Iranian authorities had their work cut out for them on Wednesday, addressing at least three different cyberattacks linked to Israel.
The war between Israel and Iran is being fought not just in the air with missiles and drones, but also online, with cyberattacks and psychological intimidation.
What happened: On Wednesday, an anti-Iranian hacking group called Gonjeshke Darande, or “Predatory Sparrow,” claimed a cyberattack on Nobitex, one of Iran’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, moving nearly $90 million and threatening to publish the platform’s source code, leaving it vulnerable to other hackers.
The funds were taken in the early hours of the morning to wallets controlled by the hacking group, according to blockchain analysis company TRM Labs.
In social media posts, the hackers alleged that Nobitex helps the Iranian government avert sanctions and finance illicit operations around the globe.
