X confirms blocking jailed Istanbul mayor Imamoglu’s account in Turkey
The social media platform said it would challenge the court ruling while complying to avoid nationwide throttling.
ANKARA — Jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu’s X account was blocked in Turkey, the social media platform confirmed on Thursday.
“X received an order to restrict access in Turkey to the account of the now-detained Mayor of Istanbul,” the platform’s Global Government Affairs said in a post.
“While we have followed Turkey’s order regarding the account, we strongly disagree with the order and are challenging the order in court.”
X’s lawyer in Turkey, Gonenc Gurkaynak, also confirmed that the platform would appeal the ruling.
