Turkey’s Fidan in Russia as Trump accuses Putin of ‘needless’ killing in Ukraine
The top Turkish diplomat’s Moscow visit follows Istanbul peace talks and the US president's rare criticism of the Russian leader.
ANKARA — Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday for talks, with bilateral ties and Ukraine among the top items on the agenda.
The pair discussed recent efforts to end the Russian war in Ukraine as well as bilateral issues in the economy and energy fields, a Turkish diplomatic source told journalists after the meeting on condition of customary anonymity. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also joined the meeting, the Kremlin said without elaborating.
Background: Fidan traveled to Russia for a two-day visit in which he is also expected to meet with Foreign Intelligence Service head Sergei Naryshkin later on Monday. Fidan and Lavrov are also slated to have one-on-one talks on Tuesday, according to the Turkish official.
Earlier on Monday, Fidan held his first meeting with Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky, who led the Russian delegation at peace talks with a Ukrainian delegation in Istanbul earlier this month.
