Trump floats plan for Gaza 'freedom zone'
The US president once more suggested that the United States could take ownership of the Palestinian territory.
DOHA, Qatar — President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that the United States should "take" control of the Gaza Strip and transform it into a "freedom zone" following 19 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
"I have concepts for Gaza that I think are very good, make it a freedom zone, let the United States get involved and make it just a freedom zone," Trump told reporters in Doha on the second leg of his Middle East trip.
"I'd be proud to have the United States have it, take it, make it a freedom zone, let some good things happen. Put people in homes where they can be safe,” he added.
A day earlier, Israeli military strikes killed at least 80 Palestinians in Gaza, according to local health officials. Those killed in strikes on the Jabalia area of northern Gaza on Wednesday reportedly included women and children.
