Tom Barrack talks Syria aid during Saudi Arabia, Jordan visits: What to know
The US and EU recently lifted numerous sanctions on Syria, and the country received a massive wheat shipment on Wednesday.
New US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack met the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Jordan on Wednesday as Washington intensifies discussions and efforts to let aid into Syria after the lifting of US sanctions this month.
Barrack, who is also US ambassador to Turkey, met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh before heading to Jordan, where he met Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in Amman.
The envoy and Prince Faisal "discussed steps to support the Syrian people on both the humanitarian and economic levels, along with ways to provide aid and assistance during this critical phase,” the Saudi ministry posted on X. Along with Turkey, Saudi Arabia played a major role in pressing the Trump administration to remove sanctions on Syria. The US president announced the decision on May 14, as he met Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Saudi Arabia.
Following the meetings in Riyadh, Barrack emphasized the need to "work with its valued regional partners to enable Syrians to create a new mosaic of peace, prosperity, and security."
