Iran’s IRGC unveils underground 'drone city': What to know
Iran has unveiled a number of weapons and bases and held military drills in 2025 amid tensions with the United States and Israel.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps unveiled a new underground drone base Thursday in a bold show of military might, sending a signal to Washington as nuclear talks resume and tensions with Israel remain high.
IRGC commander Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami said the “subterranean drone base” is operated by the corps’ naval forces in the southern Hormozgan province on Iran’s Gulf coast. The complex features reconnaissance drones that can monitor US aircraft carriers, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency reported.
Iranian media outlets published footage of the base.

Why it matters: Iran has been building up its military throughout the year, unveiling a number of new weapons and facilities as well as conducting military exercises. Earlier this month, Iran unveiled a new ballistic missile it claimed could reach Israel and bypass US defense systems. In late April, the IRGC unveiled a new high-speed vessel.
