Iran's delegations visit Oman, Russia as 'temporary' nuclear deal floated
With US-Iran nuclear talks stalled over nonnegotiable red lines, Tehran is ramping up diplomacy — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian visited Oman and Security Chief Ali Akbar Ahmadian arrived in Russia — to push for a deal on its own terms.
TEHRAN — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was in Muscat on Tuesday in a high-profile visit aimed at reinvigorating the stalled nuclear talks with the United States. The two-day trip follows the fifth round of US-Iran negotiations in Rome last week, which ended without a breakthrough.
"We appreciate Oman's active and constructive role in the indirect negotiations process between Iran and the US," Pezeshkian said during a meeting with Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq after a formal welcome ceremony at Muscat's Al Alam Palace, according to the Iranian presidential office.
Accompanying the Iranian president is a sizable business delegation. Ahead of the visit, Central Bank Governor Mohammad Reza Farzin landed in the Omani capital to discuss banking cooperation and trade mechanisms.
The current volume of Iran-Oman bilateral trade stands at approximately $2.3 billion, a figure Pezeshkian said he hopes to increase through closer maritime and industrial ties, as he underlined business potentials beyond oil and gas for long-term economic cooperation.
