Palestinian Islamic Jihad says Syria arrested 2 members: What we know
One of the US demands for sanctions relief on Syria is not engaging with Islamic Jihad, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups.
Syrian authorities have arrested two members of Islamic Jihad, the Palestinian armed group said on Tuesday, as Damascus seeks sanctions relief from Washington.
Islamic Jihad’s armed wing, Saraya al-Quds, said in a statement on Telegram that Khaled Khaled, who is responsible for the group’s activities in Syria, and Yasser al-Zafari, who heads their organizing committee, have been detained in Syria for five days.
What happened: The brigade said the arrest was made “without explanation” and “in a manner we did not wish to see from brothers whose land has always been a haven for loyalists and free people.”
Saraya al-Quds called on Syrian authorities to release Khaled and Zafari, saying the group only poses a threat to Israel.
